As the alarm went off in the darkness at 7:00am, the weather report declared our morning destination to be a not so sweltering -23 degrees Celsius. Welcome to  winter in Canada. The thought of meeting our friends for a day of snowshoeing seemed ludicrous at best. Surely we could just hide under the covers and wait for spring.

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”  Lewis Carroll ~ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”   Anne Bradstreet

“My old grandmother always used to say, Summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.” George R.R. Martin

Enjoying winter in Canada

“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” Edward Abbey

We got out of bed, drove 40 minutes, strapped on our snowshoes and spent the rest of the day smiling. With enough warm clothes and an ultimate winter toolkit anything is possible! Including surviving winter in Canada.
