I have a confession. I am a Canadian and I do not like winter. Each year as people gasp in awe at the gorgeous fall colours, I begin to dread ice and snow on the doorstep. This year I am giving myself an attitude adjustment and pulling up my big girl snow pants. While searching for joy in the frigid season I found myself gazing down the runs of a tube park.
It would be challenging to find a Canadian kid who has not known the delight of sliding down a snowy hill. Inner tubes for sledding were commonplace in my Canadian prairie childhood. The memory of my brother, cousins and I tubing and tobogganing warms the heart of this winter whiner.
At Calgary’s Winsport Acura Tube Park, the tubes look similar to those I knew as a kid. However I will be the first to admit the setup is far safer.
Not a tree, boulder or wandering cow to be seen here.
Boasting Western Canada’s largest tube park, the 10 lanes at Calgary Winsport have snow shoulders to keep tubers from sliding into each other. With lanes close to 200m (650 feet) in length, a lot of happy winter giggling goes on.
Who can go tubing at Winsport Acura Tube Park?
Having been on these same ski slopes with our son as a little guy, now decades later we invited him along to try the newest ride in Calgary. Always good to have someone young and strong around should the parents require assistance.
Riding the moving magic carpet to the top of the hill makes this winter tubing adventure possible for most anyone. No whining about having to slog up a mountain. As easy as standing on a moving sidewalk.
Great news for our son, No need to carry his Mother up the mountain.
Tubers must be a least 36 inches tall and can not sit on a parent’s lap. The ride is a one tube per person system although a parent can hold on to the child’s tube.
Our special tips for the Tube Park
Dress warmly. No matter how much of a positive attitude one has about winter it can be cold tubing down a hill. Think warm boots, snow pants, mittens, hat and ski goggles. Zipping down the 200 meter incline expect some windchill.
Helmets are strongly recommended. If you do not own a helmet you can rent one at Winsport.
Purchasing your tickets on line will save you from queuing to buy tickets at Winsport. Only 2 hour passes can be purchased on line. The time begins on your first ride up the magic carpet.
3 and 4 hour passes can be purchased at the tube park. However on busy days only two hour passes are sold.
Redeem on line tickets at guest services either in person or at kiosks beside the desk.
The tube park can be very busy. I am not the only one who thinks tubing is putting the fun back into winter in Calgary. Our advice is to arrive when the park opens. Hours of operation are here.
For the most fun of all try group tubing. In specific lanes, tubers can link up by holding the handles of fellow riders tubes and slide down together Whether you are 4 or 84 that is a winter giggle guarantee.
