It is difficult to see the beauty of sparkling snow through the frost on my eyelashes. No matter the rays of sunshine dancing on dangling icicles, the cold challenges of winter are real. I find comfort in winter quotations. Perhaps as one who finds sharing risk of frostbite in minutes, snow sayings and winter quotes presume you are not alone in this icy land.
Confessing that on many cold winter mornings, winter wonderland quotes make me roll my eyes. I wonder if authors of these winter season quotes gleefully see a few snowflakes and marvel at the wonder?
Or are their snow quotes written while shoveling drifts from sidewalks until the pathway resembles a tunnel? Ever the optimist, I take solace in their winter season quotes.
May this find you warming by a crackling fire with mug in hand. May your snowfall be light and your heart full of kindness and warmth.

50 Ultimate Travel Quotations to Inspire Your Journey
Hi, Sue and Dave – These are perfect (and very timely) quotes. I was just over at My French Chronicles, where Vero posted beautiful photos of the ice and icicles all around her. That was my first reminder to embrace the nature around me. Your post was the second reminder. (I think that the Universe is trying to tell me something). Lesson aside, I did especially love your last quote. Thank you for the morning smile…and for sharing your brilliant photography!
Donna this week has been particularly challenging here with record setting low temperatures. It makes me wonder how the early settlers survived such conditions. Happy to share these wise, and sometimes smile inducing words with you. Thank you for the kind feedback on the photos too. Snow certainly brings out the beauty of a landscape.
I’ve been bugging everyone north of the Mason/Dixon line about how I miss snow and how hot we are getting already! So here it goes, Sue – I MISS SNOW, so thank you for showing me some!!
GP if I could package up a snowbank of ours I would happily ship it off to you. you are most welcome for a virtual snow fix!
These are terrific! What a great project to compile this list of winter quotes. Of course, Calvin does it again. So funny. I hope it warms up for you soon. xo
Sometimes it is best to laugh, especially when the windchill is -35C. Warmer weather on the way and above freezing next weekend. Have to love the Calgary roller coater of weather.
I remember when I lived there that I often took another set of clothing with me as you never knew when the weather would suddenly change.
So true Darlene. The weather this weekend compared to last is 20 degrees warmer. You just never know.
The notion of a snowflake being winter’s butterfly is rather appealing, although they are beautiful in their own right, Sue. I spent 10 minutes chasing a very lovely yellow and green butterfly this afternoon. I’d probably do better at catching snowflakes 🙂 🙂
Unless it’s a blizzard I would expect the snowflake would be a far easier catch Jo. I’m smiling at the though of you on the chase of your butterfly in the warm sunshine.
Such great quotes and photos, Sue. I love the one about snowflakes being winter’s butterflies. Our son and family head up to Vermont most weekends in the winter season. They enjoy skiing and snowboarding and apparently Taylor asked her dad, “Could granny and granddad come with us one day?” My son replied that living in Florida as we do, we’d never survive the freezing cold. I think he’s right about that, although we did manage to live through Christmas at Tahoe a couple of years ago. I’m a very warm-blooded creature these days, but I do love to see snowy images and videos of people enjoying winter sports.
Most of all I love that your grandchildren want you to join them. Once travel is safer and easier picture yourself in a warm ski lodge by the fire with hot chocolate in hand. The grandkids popping in between ski runs, you watching from the windows. meanwhile I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed our snowy images and winter quotes. the butterfly snowflake comparison struck me as well.
What a beautiful snow wonderland images! We have had warm winter until now, but no snow.
Thank your for sharing these quotes.
Thank you Amy. I appreciate your kind feedback. Would you expect to get any snow during the winter months?
Beautiful quotations, heart warming and inspiring. The photos are also magical, I particularly love the photo of your granddaughter with her ski instructor. Many places in the UK have snow at the moment, but here in Bournemouth we have not had any yet.
Thank you Gilda for the kind feedback. We certainly are in the heart of snow season. Our granddaughter is loving her ski lessons and now is skiing on terrain I am not comfortable on. At four years old! Not that I am a very good skier but still it’s a remarkable thing to watch.
Here’s hoping you get at least a few snowflakes before winter tags spring to come forward.
Good ones! I’m not sure about that one that says “no spring skips its turn”, though. I remember a few years in Calgary where both spring and summer seemed to get skipped. 😉
Haha well true enough sometimes in Calgary there does seem to be quite a see saw event in the change of seasons. At least the snowbanks change clothes and become puddles.
Great collection of snow sayings! The older I get the less I enjoy being cold and that applies to our winter, where the maximum temperature hovers around 17 to 18 degrees C. 🙂 Having said that, seeing a landscape like this at least once in my life would be very exciting.
I can imagine it would be quite shocking to find yourself in -25C. This past week has been unusually cold. By next weekend we will be back to more seasonal temperatures just below freezing. For now I’m happy to share our snowy scenes and inspiration virtually.
What? No Shakespeare? “”Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun of York”. I have no idea what it means, which category it would go under. But I just had to show!
Paul thanks for bringing Shakespeare to the party. I did see that winter quote but admit I had no idea where it should go either.
Okay – so this is a top post for me this month – maybe even this year – but too soon to say
and as we just had some snow come down the last couple of days – I was trying to explain to folks why I love it and why we chose to live someplace that had a full four seasons
– and Sue (and Dave) you helped me with this quote from Steinbeck:
“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”– John Steinbeck
that was exactly what I was trying to say –
–
thanks for the other quotes too and photos –
and wishing you a enjoyable weekend
Whenever I am feeling discouraged I shall come back to your generous and uplifting comments. Thank you for the very kind words. I do wonder what it might be like to live some where with non changing weather, or just minor changes. I do agree with Steinbeck that the appreciation of summer is heightened with the enduring winter. Is there anything more exciting than seeing the first blossom of spring time that has been laying quiet under a snowbank for 6 months?
Sending our best back to you as well. XO
thanks sue and that was nice to read just now!
i had a handful of Christmas seasons in Florida and two in California and no, no, no!
live sweater weather and cold days – and snow
maybe in my blood from western new york (which i heard might be colder and more brutal ((lake effect)) than the great white north – or certain parts of canada – haha – kidding)
anyhow / have a great week and ttys
Well I think the thing about living in Canada is that we are prepared for the cold. All the clothes, gear, houses insulated so well. Not to mention the years of conditioning to it. 🙂
Have a great week!
These are all wonderful quotes and photos Sue. It’s hard to believe you’re amongst all that beautiful fresh snow whilst we’re baking in our summer sun. Have a great weekend. Stay happy and sending warm hugs from down under. 💙
Sometimes it feels that we might be living on different planets! Enjoy that warmth and we will bundle up and enjoy the snow as best we can.
Innovative post. I love the feel of snow. Assembled(with family help) my first snowman in calgary in 2015
But I know will not be able to bear the cold for too long as used to India seasons
How wonderful that you had the snowman building experience Indra! When one is not used to the winter temperatures and snow it is understandable that visits are shorter outside. I love the image of you with your family having that winter fun. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great quotes and great pictures!! It took me back to our years living in Denver (especially the shoveling snow)!!! Just heard from our Seattle girls….they are getting more snow today than they usually see in Seattle….and boy are their pictures beautiful! Love this post Sue….
As cold as it is snow really does add magic to a landscape. Lovely that your girls are getting some in Seattle. I’m sure it will melt soon for them.
Denver on the other hand can get quite a lot I understand. As I understand a climate quite similar to Calgary being so near the mountains.
Thanks for the kind comment and visit Kirt. Always appreciated.
Such a lovely post and fabulous snow pics Sue. I love all the quotes and as we don’t get snow like you, I can’t imagine how it feels. The Kahlil Gibran quote is one of my favourites here. You live in an amazingly beautiful place.
Amazing how our planet can provide such diverse locations and conditions, each with their own beauty. We feel very fortunate to live near the mountains, both winter and summer.
Thank you for the lovely comment. Kahlil Gibran is one of my favourites.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. We have a little winter here in Van at the moment – i.e. snow! My faves from this collection are Camus, Priestly about the first fall of snow – so true!, and Dear Winter I’m breaking up with you!
Happy snow frolicking! And Happy Valentines!
I began trying to select my favorite but soon gave up as there were too many that I loved to select just one.
Glad you enjoyed them Ray. I agree tough to pick just one.
These are great! I actually love the snow and the cold (not the extreme cold). I can totally relate to the J.B. Priestly quote about the first snowfall of the season. I’m still like a little kid when that happens. And, I love the feeling of sunshine on my face on a cold winter day.
Good to have a positive attitude about winter. there is no denying the beauty of snow and the magic of it on a landscape.
Sue, I am indeed keeping warm. No fire required with our 34 degree days and super high humidity.
I really like some of the quotes you’ve chosen. This has been a favourite of mine for a while now – In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” —Albert Camus
I like the Watterson quote too about snowflakes and classrooms. Interesting analogy indeed.
Your photos demonstrate the beauty of snow so well here, Sue. But I appreciate all the problems that go with brutal temperatures, so the quotes were espec. uplifting and respectful of this season. There were many quotes here that I was unfamiliar with, and I enjoyed them. Thank you.
