Alberta’s Icefields Parkway is a show stopper. One hundred ancient glaciers, turquoise mountain lakes and cascading waterfalls line the roadway. Arguably one of Canada’s, if not the world’s, most beautiful road trips. We are about to experience the splendor from Jasper to Banff on two wheels.
Icefields Parkway Map and Itinerary
I admit to wondering if I was strong enough to cycle from the mountain towns of Jasper to Banff. Ben Johnson, owner of Mountain Madness Tours, assures me there is no rush to finish.
Each leg of the four day ride is fully supported. Since cyclists have no gear to carry and a van nearby for those who would like a break there is no need to worry. I am taking Ben at his word.
I’m not sure I could cycle the Icefields Parkway. Look at those mountains!
It seems like a daunting challenge at first glance. So while there are gorgeous mountains, the grade of the inclines average 2%-6%. Anyone who has a medium level of fitness is recommended for the tour.
Ben tells me that with the support provided people of varying fitness levels and all shapes and sizes have completed this dream trip.
It sounds like a lot of work. Can’t I just drive from Jasper to Banff?
Driving the Icefields Parkway is a road trip not to be missed. Weaving through sweeping valleys of two Canadian national parks, the scenery is jaw dropping. Yes you can definitely get in a car.
Traveling by bike the pace will slow down. In my case very slow. I have long since learned being the fastest or strongest is not necessary to have the trip of a lifetime. Time to appreciate the sights and sounds of the majestic Canadian Rockies.
In 2015 cycling this pristine journey was awarded the prestigious title of a Canadian Signature Travel Experience.
Where do you sleep?
Finally we arrive to the icing on the cake of the cycling trip. Each night the cyclists arrive to unique and cozy mountain hotels. Hot baths, cold beverages and delicious meals after a day of pedaling. Almost one of my top reasons for going on a cycling trip is the pampering at the end of the day!
Most of all wish us luck! Who is coming along on the Icefields Parkway?
