If laughing is good for your health then a large dose of well being is handed out at Bower Ponds. Ninety minutes north of Calgary Alberta, the city of Red Deer is echoing with giggles, chuckles and snorts. Wondering where all that laughter is coming from? It’s the water ball.
While we explore more of our own Canadian backyard, the squeal worthy discovery of water balls at Bower Ponds occurred. Yes I did the squealing but Hubby was very keen on this adventure.
Red Deer’s inner city parkland offers a huge variety of recreation opportunities. Gorgeous walking and cycling paths, paddle boats, kayaks and a two-seater Surrey bike to start. While those are excellent things to do in Red Deer, the water ball steals the show. And the laughs for that matter.
What is a water ball?
Think walking on water is impossible? Maybe challenging but not impossible. A water ball is a large, inflatable plastic sphere with a zipper entrance. Similar to a zorb, which rolls down hills, a water ball only has one layer of plastic. The zipper allows for easy entrance and exit of the water walker.
Are the water balls at Bower Ponds safe?
The ball is tethered by rope to a staff member at all times. Therefore even in a sudden gust of wind you are in safe hands. Getting the ball in and out of the water is done under instruction.
Once blown up with air, the ball with person now inside, is rolled by a staff member into the water.
Tips for walking in a water ball
Run. Run as fast as you can. Like a hamster on a supersonic wheel. The ball is, as you might imagine, rather challenging to balance. By running you keep the momentum going forward.
Try to relax. Keep your knees bent. Arms out and upward to keep your balance. Or to look like a maniac waving madly. One or the other.
Practice. Unless you are an eight year old gymnast, walking in a water ball will take some skill building. Laugh. It’s good for you.
Who do you think gave you a better dose of laughter? Hubby or I? Would you be up for trying a water ball?
